Remettre l'ouvrage sur le métier, empreindre et effacer sans cesse la toile, y pénétrer obstinément et l'habiter au point de s'y fondre, tels sont les traits et les lignes de force de l'opus magnum d'Angel Vergara. Son acte fondateur fut, dans les années 1980, de s'envelopper d'un drap blanc - comme d'une toile vierge ou d'un linceul fantomatique - pour filtrer et transposer en diagramme toute une écologie urbaine et une économie d'échanges humains (marchands, culturels, politiques ou artistiques). En plus de l'agilité du pinceau, de la fluidité de la couleur et de la liberté d'une toile parfois partagée avec des passants, c'est l'ingéniosité de dispositifs hybrides et d'assemblages auxquels Straatman, son alter ego, aura recours qui singularise, dans l'art contemporain, une oeuvre en forme d'allégorie de la peinture et en prise directe avec le réel.
