Cet ouvrage analyse le sport comme un puissant marqueur d'identités ethniques et culturelles. Il s'inscrit dans une perspective globale et décentralisée. Les neuf chapitres suivis d'un post-face sont le fruit d'un travail collectif réalisé par des historiens français, néerlandais, belges et britanniques. L'angle d'approche se fixe sur les parcours de vie de personnalités sportives soigneusement choisis : le sportman Pim Mulier, les boxeurs Harry Sparendam et Battling Siki, les cyclistes Adriaan Kerkhoven et Abdelkader Zaaf, le coureur de fond Abebe Bikila, le footballeur Zinedine Zidane. Ces portraits se déclinent sur le mode de champions issus d'anciennes colonies. Chaque chapitre interroge la relation binaire colonisateur/colonisé mettant à l'oeuvre l'espace sportif comme un processus complexe. Le sport apparaît ainsi comme un observateur priviligié de l'histoire des relations coloniales et postcoloniales entre l'Europe et le reste du monde.

This work offers an analysis of sport as a powerful marker of ethnic and cultural identities. Its conception is both global and decentralized. The nine chapters and accompanying afterword spring from a collaborative research project undertaken by French, Dutch, Belgian and British historians. Their joint investigations centre on the life courses of a set of carefully selected sporting figures : all-rounder Pim Mulier, boxers Harry Sparendam and Battling Siki, cyclists Adriaan Kerkhoven and Abdelkader Zaaf, distance runner Abebe Bikila, and footballer Zinedine Zidane. The resulting portraits focus attention on sporting champions whose origins lie in formerly colonized territories. Each chapter interrogates the binary relationship between the colonizer and the colonized, exploring the complex origins of the sporting space. Sport is thus revealed to be a privileged site for the historical investigation of colonial and post-colonial relations between Europe and the rest of the world.
